Question, I had My straight honed by a well know vendor after one shave it’s pulling and barely removing hair ? Help !

It seems like anything I use to condition my strop, makes it tacky and sticky. Every time I've conditioned, I have to wash it back out with dawn and hot water. I used a liquid conditioner very lightly. Now that I've cleaned it back out, it's kinda dry. Any ideas?

Hello, I am new to the straight razor shave and believe me... After my first shave from newly ordered straight razor.. i tried honing it a stone grit 8000 and i have blunt the razor... I realized pretty late that I have made a mistake... Any advice on retaining its original sharpness? Please try to help me if oasit

I probably shouldn't say this because of embarrassment, but if it helps one person... Use a straight edge on your stones. I have the Norton 'kit', and over time, the lapping stone became concave, leaving my stones convex. I worked back and forth, figure 8s, and circles. They all wore the same, so that marking didn't work.

Wet and dry paper , on glass or a heavy porcelain tile, cheap effective and doesnt need flattening off, if you actually shave with straight razors you will soon realise that once the initial honing is done you won't be doing if very often thereafter , so dont waste your money on fancy stones,

If someone could answer my “dumb” question, I would appreciate it. Is it the higher the number, the less grit, and the smoother the blade will be? And so the goal is to start with a low number, (high grit) and progress to smoother stones? Thank you!!

Why would a newer razor be off so much from factory?

I have 2 barber homes One has 2 sizes of grit. Box says to use red size if your razor is very dull and only do 5 or 6 strokes

This is exactly what I use….although I haven’t used my straight razor in years. DE shaving is so much easier…and the blade choices are endless…as well as the great modern DE razors.

Carbon steel and damascus steel will rust if you dont oil it and keep it dry. Stainless steel is easier to look after. I like a good hollow grind and well made

I found irl stone because of you, I used it on my dovo straight razor, restored wade and butcher straight razor and never had an issue.

So for a razor that had been abused on a worn out convex stone, will enough honing eventually straighten it out? Im using tool room stones, as I'm a machinist. I plan on finishing on a Norton HB6 ultra fine stone, followed by a strop. Logic tells me that with a dead flat stone and enough strokes, the concave edge will return to flat. I'm using lay-out blue as a visual aid to see the bevel clear as day. The razor is a Manhattan Cutlery celebrated hallow grind. 7/8 smile with a barbers noth. Looks like a W&B clone to me.

Some of those old barber hones worked best when you used, wait for it...kerosene... instead of water or lather. No I'm not even kidding.

Great video. Very informative and detailed. I'm not the only one that's discovered 2 1/2 passes. Very Mr. Rogersish delivery, but you have to be calm, slow and accurate when using a straight razor. Keep it up.

Very good information sir , i wish i would have known all this before hand . I purchased my first straight razor from WCS , with the impression , like most , that its " shave ready " , not even close . This thing wouldn't cut hot butter . Now with that being said , i am now several hundred $$ in and still cant use my razor . Now i must invest more $$ in stones to use it and thats if i can do it correctly. So i say to all who are new at this game , DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you decide to make that purchase because this is not what its made out to be . Yes , im very unhappy . Very expensive hobby . I saw one guy do the wobble test and then he taped the blade itself and reset the spine of the knife flat. Then from memory he might have reset the bevel with no tape on the knife at all and then honed the spine and knife though the grades so the spine was repolished. I understand you got this knife sharp but is there are reason you don't correct the geometry?
